Ed Simpson is an experienced corporate/commercial lawyer who combines wide-ranging technical legal expertise with hands-on business experience to provide pragmatic solution-driven advice to businesses. Ed qualified as a Solicitor in 1991. Realising that in-house lawyers are extremely proficient at applying their legal expertise practically in the realities of the commercial world and can play a valuable role in any organisation, he set up his own business in 2007 with a view to making senior and experienced in-house lawyers available to all businesses.
He has particular experience in complex commercial contract work involving software and intellectual property rights, corporate issues faced by SMEs, litigation management, and employment law. Ed also has extensive experience of helping clients contracting in the USA and continental Europe and has acted as company secretary to a number of listed companies.

Kirstie Penk is an experienced commercial lawyer and was a part owner of a wireless computer networking company prior to taking a career break to have 2 children in 2006. Kirstie is now based in Sheffield and was appointed as a director of The Legal Director in 2011 having started with the company in 2009.
Kirstie has 10+ years experience of working as an in-house lawyer and has dealt with a wide range of legal and business issues in many different legal jurisdictions. Her work includes M&As, disposals, insolvencies, VC funding, manufacturing and supply agreements, software licensing, R&D agreements, distribution agreements, property and NASDAQ regulatory matters. Kirstie has a sensible, pro-active approach and excels at finding sound business solutions to complex issues.
Kirstie qualified in 1993 at Watson Farley and Williams in London, moving to set up a European Legal team for Madge Networks, a NASDAQ listed hi-tech company in 1994. Kirstie is based in Yorkshire and works with clients in the north of England and in other parts of the UK.

Selected to develop a real estate capability for The Legal Director, James trained at SJBerwin LLP and, until recently, was an equity partner at Bond Pearce LLP. Capable of identifying many different solutions to commercial issues, and particularly strong on systems, process and relationship management, he has experience in public and private sector real estate development and management, and large scale portfolio management for corporate occupiers - retailers in particular.
Apart from retail, James has a well- developed understanding of the rail, professional services, and property industries. He has expertise in all aspects of real estate law, including funding, landlord and tenant, planning, insolvency and construction, with an emphasis on risk mitigation and the setting up of appropriate management and reporting structures.
James also developed and then helped lead a strategy for growth for his real estate department, formulated budgets and implemented a drive for less but better management information.
He has led teams on the UK wide roll-out of stores for Virgin Media, Reiss, Oasis/Karen Millen/Warehouse/Principles and continues to advise a number of other national and international brands.
In addition, he is currently advising Tribal Group plc on the management of their UK portfolio, as well as providing strategic advice on the acquisition of international real estate for them.

Jon Holt has wide-ranging experience in the management of law firms and has held a number of senior posts at Board level. He set up his own firm which merged with Eversheds in 1994, became a member of Eversheds’ Board in 2002 and led two practice groups with a combined turnover of £80m in 13 locations in the UK and Europe and a total headcount of over 900. He left Eversheds in 2008 and joined NewLaw, one of the first ABS’s, as COO at a time of remarkable growth of the business. He was also Chairman of Fairfax solicitors in Leeds from its formation until it merged with Drydens in 2012.
He joined The Legal Director in 2015 and is also currently Chairman of two other companies.
Jon’s role is assisting the Board to reach its goal for the business and to ensure that the levels of client service, for which the company has become renowned, are maintained.
Jon is based in the southwest but works throughout the UK.
